My VPS Optimization Journey: From $30/mo to $300/year

After burning through multiple cloud providers, I finally landed on Vultr. Here's what I learned the hard way.

The Problem

Was paying $30/month on DigitalOcean for a droplet that barely handled my dev projects. The CPU was always spiking at the worst times.

The Solution

Switched to Vultr's High Frequency instances. Same price, nearly 3x the compute. The catch? You lose some redundancy features — but for a personal dev box, that's an acceptable trade.

What I Run

• x-ui for VPN management (finally stopped paying for commercial VPNs)
• Nginx as reverse proxy
• Docker for isolated experiment environments
• A couple of Node.js apps behind nginx

Lessons Learned

Always check the CPU generation, not just the core count. A 2nd gen EPYC is not the same as a 4th gen. Also, IPv6 is your friend — most VPS providers give you a /64 for free.

Total monthly spend now: $25. Much better.
